What is the Direct Entry (DE) admission process, and how does it differ from the regular JAMB admission process?

Nigeria's Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) offers two admission pathways: Direct Entry (DE) and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Here's a breakdown of each:

Direct Entry (DE) Admission

- Eligible candidates: Those with advanced qualifications beyond secondary school certificates (SSCE/GCE).

- Qualifying qualifications: A-Levels, OND, NCE, HND, etc.

- Admission level: 200 level (second year)

- Course duration: Typically three years

- Application: Separate application process through JAMB portal

Regular JAMB Admission (UTME)

- Eligible candidates: Those completing secondary education, seeking admission into the first year (100 level).

- Exam: Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

- Admission level: 100 level (first year)

- Course duration: Typically four years

- Application: Through JAMB portal

Note: Candidates cannot apply for both JAMB DE and UTME in the same year.

  1. The Direct Entry (DE) admission process is for students who already have a higher qualification like a National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), or a Degree from a recognized institution. Instead of starting from scratch with JAMB (like regular candidates), DE students bypass the UTME exam and apply directly to universities for a 200-level (second-year) admission.

Here’s how it differs from the regular JAMB process:

Regular JAMB candidates need to write the UTME and meet the cut-off marks for their chosen universities. Once they pass, they can proceed to their respective schools.

DE candidates don’t need to take the UTME. They apply directly to universities offering DE programs, submit their academic qualifications, and might have to go through additional screenings (like an interview or a different entrance exam).

It’s a faster route for those who’ve already completed higher education or professional qualifications. If you’re coming from an ND or HND program, DE is a great option to continue your education at a higher level without starting all over again.
