  1. How long do potatoes last?

Uncooked potatoes: Stored in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place (like a pantry), they can last 3 to 5 weeks.

Refrigerated potatoes: Not ideal, but if refrigerated, they can last about 2 months, though refrigeration can affect taste and texture.

Cooked potatoes: Usually last about 3 to 5 days in the fridge.

How to tell if potatoes are bad:

Sprouts: Small sprouts are okay—just remove them before cooking. Large sprouts or many sprouts mean it’s time to discard.

Soft or mushy texture: Fresh potatoes should be firm. If they feel soft, wrinkled, or shriveled, they’re past their prime.

Green color: A green tint means the potato has been exposed to light and may contain solanine, a toxin. Avoid eating green parts.

Bad smell: A musty, moldy, or sour odor means the potato is spoiled.

Mold or dark spots: Visible mold or black spots are signs of decay—discard those potatoes.

If you see any of these signs, it’s best to throw the potato out.
